Helo all Hope you dont mind my dropping in , i have just found your site, and the reason that im here is because i am trying to trace my grandfather for my family tree. I have been told that he took part in the arnhem battle and that he was also takern prisoner of war. I was wondering if there is any way that i could find any details out about him . Unfortunatly i was very young when he died, but we were for a shoprt time very close. Unfortunatly i have no deatails regarding this side of the family, so am unable to ask them any questions. I would be very gratefull for any leads you could give me . I only know that my grand fathers name was Alfred Holt, and he was jewish, (not sure if he was a practising jew) and his wifes name was Anne Sorry to have waffled on, many thanks for bearing with me , all the best . aly,,,,,,,,,,, spindell

Hi Spindell, Although I myself don't have too much information I have made a few useful contacts and found a few good websites for this sort of thing during my time editting The Project. While I'm not sure how much help you could find, I would recommend emailing the webmaster of the Arnhem Archive. His name is Mark and he's an authority on the subject should you require any specific information regarding regiments or other things. There are also a number of websites for the military much like the UK's 'Friends Reunited' through which you can find regiments listed as well as their members if you have a little information with which to search. The two most popular seem to be Forces ReUnited www.forcesreunited.org.uk and Service Pals www.servicepals.com although there are countless others available through Google and other search engines. You can also get in touch with veterans of the battle at a number of these websites who would perhaps be useful in finding more about your grandfather. Should you need any more help please let me know and be sure to keep us updated of any findings at the board, I for one am interested. Kind regards, Ben, TheHistoryProject.co.uk

Hi Aly, read your post with interest. I'm currently doing the same sort of thing with ref to my own Grandad, who served in WWI with the Kings' Own Royal Lancasters, gaining the DCM in Mesopotamia, now Iraq. I have in fact obtained quite a lot of his Army record information from their museum. Might I suggest that you may be able to get some info from the Parachute Regiment, assuming your Grandfather to have been a Para? Also if you know where he came from, you may be able to get in touch with the Jewish community there? If you can get his Army number, which is unique, you can hardly go wrong, I hope!(?). All the best, Ian Winterbottom
