I am interested in reading some historical texts. The problem is there seems to be several different translations of the texts I'm interested in.
For example, I went to look for a copy of Heroditus's "Histories" on the internet. There were at least 5 translations of the same book by different people. And I think, most of the translations were made in last 100 years. My question is,
Is there some where I can go to find out which is considered the "best" translation?
I know best is a relative term, so let me say I am interested in the most romantic version. The one that was translated to inspire and be interesting even at the cost of adding a littler here or there. I am not looking for the one which most closley corresponds to the original if the cost I have to pay is dullness.
Thank you so much for your help.

Hello, That's a very difficult question. I would say that without knowing the language of the original text, you cannot tell. I would suggest to contact Tim Spalding, the editor of the Herodotus on the Web website to ask what he thinks: URL: www.isidore-of-seville.com/herodotus/ Email: editor@isidore-of-seville.com Kind regards, Jan
