Versaille and the big question. Was it right? Was it wrong? Was it fair? Was it too harsh? And ultimately did it cause the Second World War?
I would be interested in your comments as I am due to discuss it with a class within the next few weeks and would like the opinions of others before I do so.

It was not fair because it labeled the Germans as the guilty party, which was not the case. Austria and Russia were more at fault. And the notion of National Self-Determination was not carried out properly.

Someone said at the time (churchill i think) that it wasn't a peace treaty, it was a "ceasefire for twenty years". And if you count Japan's invasion of China they were spot on. They made the treaty brutally harsh and then only half enforced it, thereby giving Germany a major grevence, while not actually preventing them from rebuilding a powerful army. Have a look at Hitler's speeches justifiying every act of aggression and he always points to the injustices of the Vesailles treaty. Its doubtful that the Germans would have supported such policies if it wasn't for this.
